Braybrook College has been a regular participant in debating competitions with students at various levels of experience working closely together to develop their teamwork, awareness of current issues and public speaking skills. Students are challenged to research and contest views across a broad range of issues related to the economy, society, politics and the environment. The College participates in the competition held by the Debaters Association of Victoria as part of the Williamstown Region, with teams from all levels. Team members spend time in and out of school to broaden their understanding of complex topics and develop the ability to deliver structured speeches to an audience. Students who participate learn valuable skills: working co-operatively in a competitive environment, taking on team and leadership roles, thinking laterally and deconstructing ideas and issues – skills which can greatly assist students throughout their education and career. Furthermore, team members form strong, friendly relationships and build healthy team spirit.
