The MY Education Awards, presented by Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) celebrate individuals, programs and initiatives that have contributed to improving the experience of education for young people from multicultural backgrounds in Victoria. The Awards recognise excellence, innovation, community, perseverance and commitment. On Tuesday the 29th of September Lillian Mijock was awarded runners up in the Speaking Up, Standing Out MY Education Award. The award recognises learners who actively shape their education, lead initiatives or advocate for positive change in their school/program or community. As a Year 11 student at Braybrook College, Lillian Mijock had become a powerful advocate. Through the Power Collective, Lillian successfully advocated for changes to the school’s approach to responding to incidents of racism, helping staff better understand the impact existing practices could have on students experiencing racism. She has also helped develop and deliver student-led anti-racism workshops, ensuring younger students learn through authentic and accessible peer voices. Beyond this work, Lillian mentors younger students, supporting them to recognise and respond to racism with confidence. Through her courage, empathy and commitment to systemic change, Lillian is helping build a safer, more inclusive and equitable school community.
